An exhibition of charcoal line drawings by Geoff Matthews
"In July 1986 I took photographs during the week of the Tall Ships Race in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Having just left the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich to take up a lecturing post in Hull I needed to clarify an intimately biographical and emotional legacy. Looking at the photographs I realized there was a latent expressive power in the complex geometries of masts and rigging. I did some small sketches in charcoal and discovered the project, the essence of which concerned play with lines in compression and tension. That was in September 1986. I did nothing about it but dream, until 2014."
